A South African Public Register, for the Fitness Professional,

recognised by International Bodies ensuring constant upskilling.

REPS is a non-profit, independent public Register which recognises the qualifications and expertise of fitness professionals in South Africa. One of our key functions is to provide a system of regulation for instructors and trainers to ensure that they meet the International health and fitness industry’s standards.

Membership of Reps provides assurance and confidence to consumers, employers and fitness professionals that all registered exercise professionals are appropriately qualified and have the knowledge, competence and skills to perform specific roles. Members are acknowledged for their professionalism, their adherence to the industry’s standards and their ongoing education.

Members are bound by a Code of Ethical Practice and hold appropriate insurance & CPR. In order to remain on the Register, members must continue to meet the standards that are set for their profession through Continual Professional Development (CPD).

Members of the public can use the ‘Database Search’ facility on our website to check the credentials, skill base and services offered by individual REPs instructors.

REPs registered instructors are issued with an annual Certificate of Registration detailing their Level and must also have adequate insurance cover and CPR.

In choosing a REPs instructor your health and safety is at all times paramount in the delivery of exercise and fitness instruction.

WHO IS REPSSA?

REPSSA is operated by a board of governance.

The function of the board is to ensure strategic decisions are made, standards adhered to and to ensure that all stakeholders from the industry have a voice.

Board Members

Scott Schreuder, Chairman

Having attained a Bsc in Sports Science he went on to complete numerous other qualifications including those from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association and being a Strength and Conditioning coach. He has worked on a regional, national and EXCO level for the two major gym chains in South Africa namely Virgin Active and Planet Fitness. He is currently the Head of Products for Planet Fitness and owner of Fitness Inc and InFitness; as well as the chairman of REPS SA. He is a regular presenter at various seminars and workshops and has been a Master Trainer for 7 years now; and is an accredited facilitator and assessor. He is responsible for numerous innovative and successful products as well as being the conditioning coach to many local and international sporting teams and individuals. He will be making his debut presentation at IDEA World Fitness Convention 2011

Caitlin Carpenter, Member

Caitlin Carpenter is the Principal and Senior Manager of HFPA (Health & Fitness Professionals Academy (Pty) Ltd.). While studying her qualification at UJ, a Bsc Honours in Sports Science, she worked for HFPA as a lecturer and Project Manager. During this period, she attained a number of qualifications in continuing education in the fitness industry. Caitlin is responsible for the development of HFPA’s curriculum, accreditation and overall management.

This includes programme development for qualifications in sport and fitness while managing all the HFPA campuses, facilities and learning programmes. She has aimed to ensure that HFPA meets the quality assurance requirements of the quality assurance bodies and the legal requirements of the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Kyrie Levington, Member

Kyrie Hardiman was born in the United Kingdom in 1964. From 1984 she worked as a professional dancer, in London, performing with The Royal Opera House, English National Opera, Dance Unlimited, and other renowned dance companies. She also taught classical ballet and contemporary dance and worked as a choreographer and assistant director for several operas in London, Glasgow and Berkshire.

In 2002 she retired from dancing and moved to South Africa. Kyrie was certified as a Pilate’s instructor in 2003 and opened her own studio, PilatesHere, in 2004 where she continues to teach and run Teacher Training Courses. She qualified as Fitness Professional with eta in 2012 and has added personal Training to her teaching skills.

Deon Scheppel, MEMBER

National Product Training Manager, Virgin Active South Africa

Born and raised in Durban South Africa, Deon could always be found outdoors developing his love for sport and fitness, which is what prompted him to complete an Honours Degree in Sport Science at Stellenbosch University. After completing his studies, Deon worked for Virgin Active in both South Africa and the UK in various, fitness, management and training roles. While in London he grew his passion for developing others by moving into the field of corporate organisational development in healthcare.

This prompted him to return to school to study part-time where he completed various qualifications culminating in his Master’s degree in Human resource development from Westminster University. After 11 years living and working in the UK, the decision was made to move back to SA with his wife and 2 children. At the end of 2014 Deon took up the role of National Product Training Manager for Virgin Active South Africa. When not working on learning and development projects, Deon tries to keep fit swimming, cycling and running long distances in the great outdoors. He also dabbles in photography and videography, enjoying the creative and expressive outlet that these hobbies afford him.

Linda Halliday, Member

Linda Halliday is Managing Director of the eta. Linda’s is responsible for the development of eta’s curriculum, including programme development for qualifications in sport and fitness. Her work involves management of the eta campuses, their facilities and learning programmes, to ensure that they meet the quality assurance requirements of the quality assurance bodies and the legal requirements of the Department of Higher Education and Training.

Linda has more than twenty-years of experience in the fitness industry; having worked for various clubs and run her own studio. She took over the eta in 1994. Linda is currently busy with post graduate course work towards a Master’s degree in Higher Education Studies at the University of Cape Town.

Grant Heger, Member

Grant is currently the director of Cycle Pro Academy: a training body to Indoor Cycle Instructors in South Africa. His team have looked after the interests of Indoor Cycle in South Africa since 1998 and pioneered many of the innovations in this segment of the Fitness Industry. Grant is also a segment manager to the commercial and corporate club market for Technogym Equipment in SA: the largest supplier of Gym Equipment globally. He continues to work closely with independent clubs as well as Virgin Active and planet fitness.

He is also active in FitSA – an independent non-profit organization looking after the interests of private gyms in SA. Grant is a master trainer and motivational speaker who presents at many Fitness Conventions including the annual Sports Science/ Vitality Fitness Convention hosted in Johannesburg.

Sean De Beer, MEMBER

Having been involved in education since 2013, Sean is a Qualified Education, Training, and Development Practitioner (research, development, and implementation of qualifications to bridge gaps of knowledge in the fitness industry), and thus has been involved in the development and implementation of various qualifications in fitness that are being offered to the public today.

He has completed various qualifications in fitness: Sports Management, Personal Training, Sports Conditioning, Boxing, Boot Camp, Nutrition, and Special Populations.

Sean is the head of Support and Quality Assuring at Trifocus Fitness Academy and Trentstone College, he has been facilitating Personal Training and Boot Camp Certification since 2013, Sean is thus well versed on topics regarding fitness

It is with great pride and pleasure, that the REPSSA team announces our Official status as the ‘Registered Recognised Professional Body for the Fitness Industry‘.
This is as per the ‘Policy and Criteria for the Recognising a Professional Body and Registering a Professional Designation for the Purposes of the National Qualifications Framework Act, Act 67 of 2008′.

DESIREE VARDHAN, MEMBER

Desiree Vardhan’s vision is to transform sport through sports coaching.

Desiree is a qualified biokineticist.

Some of her leadership positions include: executive and board member- International Council of Coaching Excellence (ICCE), World Anti-Doping Agency- Education member, Steering Committee member- Physical Education Institute of SA (PEISA), director of sport at the University of Kwazululu Natal and Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.

Desiree is the driving force behind the South African Coaching Framework and the recently recognized Professional body for Sports Coaching in SA- CASA.

She was influential in establishing 9 sports coaching designations with SAQA. She had also led the Recognition of Prior learning programme for SA sports coaching that commenced in 2014.
